A few weeks ago I send out a request for those of you who have used FES units in your clinical practice to provide me with some information on FES use. Many of you wanted to know what the responses might be. So I listed a few areas that were presented.

I had about eight responses that advised me that they were using FES in their clinical practice somewhat sparingly. The success of the FES systems depended on a thorough evaluation of the patient's needs. Also some practitioners are using the FES systems in a hybrid system with AFO designs mainly to help control transverse plane rotational patterns. Some practitioners provided systems for their therapists to use to help evaluate patients and then the patients were referred to O&P to obtain their personal units.

Some practitioners advised me that these units are expensive and many insurance companies are not covering them at this time. However, one company is working hard at getting a L code for the O&P community to use.

I was advised that there are some pathologies that you would not want to use the FES system as it may fatigue muscle function rather than improve it. (Polio for example)

The question was asked earlier as to where this technology belonged either PT or O&P. It seems that it may belong in both areas with close teamwork.

Hope this helps to those of you that were interested as I was.
