Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all of the responses, here they are...
I'll let you all know what finally ends of succeeding when we get there!

To refresh your memories the original query was this:

Hi, I need some help. I have a 10 year old boy who had some anterior horn
cell damage following meningitis that left him with some brachial plexus
insufficiencies. His right shoulder has no function, but he can flex his
elbow and use his hand. He wants to participate in sports, but they are
concerned that because his shoulder is so atrophied and unsupported that he
will cause further damage to his brachial plexus, any suggestions on how to
keep him safe and active, while still allowing him to use what function he
has of his right elbow and hand? Thanks, Karen

He already has a lined polyeth biceps cuff and shoulder support with
adjustable straps to tighten the cuff proximally and a strap that goes
around his trunk, this isn't supporting him to our satisfaction for safety
in sport because his shoulder still subluxes in it due to tissue play and
the weight and motion of his lower arm, I'm thinking we're going to have to
add some support below the elbow somehow too, or maybe just make a one piece
custom molded arm and shoulder piece. Comments and suggestions are welcome!

Hi Karen,
Look at the Wilmer Carrying Orthosis that is available through Becker
Orthopedics. I think it is a product from the Netherlands where it has been
used for some time with good reults on post-CVA patients. It is like a
portable balanced forearm orthosis. With some modifications for size it
could be just the thing you're looking for.

Good question! I'm not sure of the answer, but have you tried a strap
attached to the proximal end of the humeral section and have it loop around
the trunk on the opposing side to offer some upward pressure? This may
offer enough stability (along with the rest of the orthosis) to inhibit
dislocation.

Just a thought...Let me know what happens.

Tom

You could try using a shoulder saddle with cuff around upper arm for
support.

Karen,

Have you considered a shoulder sling like the one attached? (PEL has it
Highland Shoulder Sling) There are others out there too.

Good Luck!
