Dear Mr. Cornell and List Serve,
I also know of someone that requires help. Juan Julajuj Ortiz is 30 years old and a native of Guatemala. On 4 July 1998 he lost both arms (with only a humeral remnant remaining on each side) in an electrocution while working on the powerlines. Unlike the USA, Guatemala does not have a very good workers comp program. They made him a set of body powered arms and sent him back into the mountains. He found them very uncomfortable and very few adjustments were made to make them better. His government promised a set of electric arms 2 years ago, but they said they were waiting for funding help from the USA??? He seems to think they have just put him off.
I met Juan during a recent medical mission and explained that I would voice his situation to the list serve. My major concern is that it has been many years since Juan was fit with his body powered arms (as evidenced by the dust and rust that was on them when he showed them to me). He would truly need something more than a fit and forget set of limbs to be accepting and successful with the.
If anyone has an idea of what we could do to help Juan, let me know.
While I was in San Lucas, I was able to evaluate and measure 3 AKAs and 1 BKA for prostheses. The BKA was a young girl that was so ashamed of her deformity that she hid her residual limb in cow dung to hide it from view. It was a tearful story. I am sending 4 lower extremity limbs over to Guatemala next week to be fit by an experienced PT that is going on yet another medical mission to the San Lucas area.
If anyone else, experienced in O&P is going to the area, please let me know. It would be great to have better follow-up. Thank you and God bless you all for your time.
