Good post and interesting study, Nancy. Part of my consulting work is
on OSHA. I always see techs not using any personal protective
equipment. We have had an OSHA outreach group come to our practice on a
voluntary basis to test and see if the techs HAD to use PPE. We had air
samples taken for all the chemicals your paper lists. Our lab has a
pretty mid to high volume. All the samples came back as well under the
PEL (permissible exposure limit). That said, there is always a chance
for overexposure during various periods of time in the day. It is a
good recommendation for anyone exposed to these chemicals every day to
wear a vapor mask. In prosthetics, a NIOSH mask when laminating is a
good safety precaution. If you are going to use a NIOSH, remember that
your staff has to be cleared to wear one by a physician. The mask does
cut down on oxygen levels and you need to be sure the lung capacity is
not limited. Also, that there is not facial hair, as that limits the
seal of the mask.
Although these precautions are 'annoying' and NOT required by the letter
of the law, it does aid in helping to cut down any exposure
opportunity. When I was in blood banking, I remember when everyone
balked at having to wear gloves when working with patients. Now, they
would be totally creeped out NOT wearing them.
Keep in mind, anyone can have OSHA come to your practice for a free
consultation and evaluation. Check OSHA.gov for information. We have
had this done several times and each time, learned from it. You do have
to fix what they find, but better this way than by a 'surprise' visit!
