hello everyone,
several days ago i have posted a message regarding stitches removal - is it
appropriate to be done by o and p practitioners or not, and what kind of
supportive documentation either wise can i have?
aftermath is simple:
1. no one is aware of any official regulations
2. ABC scope of practice was referred to several times. i think, it is a
good idea, should ABC, actually, modify it appropriately. as a practitioner
that practiced in 5 states, i know how widely spread is the issue of not
only stitches removal but, also, HALO screws.
3. several people advised on referring to a referral source - in this case,
hospital - chief of stuff and checking with established policies. i almost
initiated this, but now my issue is resolved. i still think it is a very
good idea. have no doubt they have only medical personnel listed for this.
4. several people suggested checking with malpractice insurance. i agree
with this either.
in general, most of the response was - do not do it. we, as profession,
neither qualify, nor had proper training, nor are covered from potential
liability issues.
second type of response was i've been doing this for xx many years and
never had any trouble. i really like quoting our CFO on this - it's like
cheating on taxes. flows good until got caught. (or life happened)
fortunately, my issue was resolved in most pleasant manner. i got under some
gentle pressure to do stitches removal because we will lose the referral
source as the other guy does it. oh, those other guys!!
anyways, i simply went to the referral source (doctor) in question. his
answer was very straightforward: *do NOT remove stitches. we have plenty of
QUALIFYING personnel that will do it when necessary.*
**
and that took care of it. i forwarded this to the concerned management. i
do not think i'll ever have the question raised again.
hope this will help others in similar situation. appreciate everyone's time
and helpful messages. also, i want to credit my school director, john
fergusson, and current director, daniel abrahamson, who educated us in the
right spirit and supported me later.
sincerely,
