I recently had a unique request of our company and would like to share
it with you.
What sounded on the phone like a middle eastern accent from a young lady
in Austria called PRS and asked for me by name. In very broken English, she
kept telling me she wanted to come to me to have an AK made because she was
very unhappy with her current one. Since I know I'm not the best around or
gullible enough to think she could not find someone in Austria to fit her
properly, I requested that she E-mail me a request and detail what she
expected of me. In her E-mail, she explained in great detail the facts of an
AK prosthesis, including the description of a c-leg. At the end of her
e-mail she requested that I send her an invitation from my company so she
could get a visa from the US to come over for me to build a leg. I called
INS and spoke with a man there who warned me about writing this type of
invitation. He suggested I request photos of her wearing a limb, one with
her limb off, and one of her limb off but next to her. I made that request
and sure enough, I received nothing in return. This has disturbed me to the
point that I felt compelled to let our industry know what was attempted. Do
not fall for this trick as someone will use this method to get into the US
and they won't be amputees. Isn't it a shame we have to be so suspicious?
