A number of O and P certified practitioners in SE Michigan and myself are
involved in a non-profit organization that is geared toward building a
national rehabilitation hospital in Ghana, Africa. The country and
surrounding region are in dire need of not only expert medical
rehabilitative care, but orthotic and prosthetic services as well. The
Ghana Medical Rehabilitation Group (GMRG) was sparked by the vision of Dr.
Andrew Haig of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at the
University of Michigan. It currently thrives on the insight and motivation
of other medical care professionals and Ghanaian natives working and/or
attending school in the U.S.
Plans to materialize the visions set forth are currently slow-moving due to
the early development and consequent lack of funding for the GMRG. This is
a great opportunity to put OandP at the forefront of international medical
rehabilitation by providing early support in this effort. The GMRG has big
plans for fundraising in the US and a regional medical rehabilitation
conference in Ghana in 2007. Once the group has gained enough funding to
implement these plans, they will be looking more at specified projects, such
as developing a business plan for OandP education and practice in Ghana.
For anyone willing to donate, I have tax-deductible information. Anyone
with previous experience in providing OandP services in low-income
countries, your insight is welcome.
