ORIGINAL QUESTION:
Dear Colleagues:
A production worker in my employ has become interested in the field of O&P. He has asked me for books teaching O&P skills for technicians. All my references - with the exception of one book on custom shoe modifications - are more inclined toward the practitioner. Can anyone direct me to books like my employee would be interested in? I assume they exist, as I know there are schools for O&P technicians. Thank you, in advance, for your help. David
RESPONSES:
I don't think that there are books made available to anyone with out
going to school. We tried to get some 2 years ago and failed. Good luck
and please post your replies.

David,
You can try getting copies of Charles H. Anderson's books: Manual of Lower
Extremity Orthotics and Manual of Upper Extremity Orthotics these were
printed by Charles Thomas Publishing. Also you can contact Century College
in Minnesota they had a technicians program. Other sources are the NYU and
UCLA supplements for orthotists and prosthetists. Some of these books may
not be available as new but might be found on the web as used.
Good Luck ,

I am in process of transferring several years of note into a technical
manual. The working title is The Orthotic Technician's Cookbook. I
hope to have a draft complete next year for peer review. Is there
anything that you are looking for in particular or would like to see in
a text? I look forward to your input.

Strathclyde has one that may be available.
Also Miles Andersons books are fabrication oriented.

Hi David,
Go to www.centurycollegebookstore.com Then go to orthotic technology section. I just purchased all of those for a technician of mine last fall and they seem to be pretty good. I took that course in White Bear lake in '84 and it was excellent.
||
Ask to call otto bock. See if he can purchase a fabrication manual from them. I don't know for certain but I would think they have one since they put on a tech. or used to put on a technical course. He could also call the White Bear Lake school in Michigan, or there is the University of Oklahoma.

David,
All that I know of are out of print.
The best are the AOPA Technician's manual and the two by Miles Anderson,
Upper Limb Orthotics and Lower Limb Orthotics.
All the best,

David, There is a book by Kent K. Wu titled Foot orthoses : prinicples and clinical applications published in 1990 that, if my memory is correct, has some details about his approach to FO fabrication. There is also a DVD available from the Pedorthics Footwear Association that covers grinding techniques; again I believe it is focused on foot orthoses. I teach at Century College and our technician course packets are generated here and would be of little value with out an instructor to compliment them. I think I have some old fabrication information that might be of use to your employee. Is he interested in a particular aspect; Lower Limb, Spine Upper Extremity?

Hi David.
Your contact details were sent to me in connection to your need for Prosthetic books.
I am a Prosthetic Technician at the Wellington Artificial Limb Centre, under the New Zealand Artificial Limb Board in Wellington New Zealand.
At the Pros-th-otics conference in Wellington this year I presented a Bench Alignment Reference Book I had drawn and written for technicians.
It is based on my 28 years experience as a technician and came about after attending the Hong Kong ISPO conference where a need was identified for training of alignment. I based my recommendations on the major manufacturers and my experience, and know the recommendations to be a very satisfactory starting point for bench alignment.
An older version of my book is currently being used by many technicians in New Zealand, and the new version was well received by delegates from all over the world at the Wellington conference. So I have sent the new version to be published. The publishing process should be complete in the next week or so. I hope to be able to sell it at near cost as I'm not interested in making profit, just covering expenses. I anticipate each copy to cost NZD$40 or around USD$25.
The book covers in simple line drawings basic bench alignment for Bk's, Ak's, Hip Disaticulation, Be's and Ae's, also attachment points for a variety of suspensions on Bk's, and Ak's.
I too had problems finding simple information in a single book, I usually had to wade through thick books for a single picture, so I thought my book might be a simple solution having everything you need in the one place, the book is about 22 pages of drawings. I'm having the book printed on plastic paper to increase the durability as I anticipate it being used in a workshop environment.
