I would like to get some feedback from Prosthetists who have used the U2
and the Boston Elbow. What system do you prefer and what are your likes
and dislikes with each system. I have a patient who has been wearing a
U2 for over 12 years (started with the original Utah arm). He wants a
new prosthesis and would like to have more lift, I know the Boston is
capable of more lift; I just don't have any experience with the Boston
system. I am a little leery about using a new system but am willing to
learn, especially if it means improved function for my patient.
My patient is a Male in his late 50's, 6'3 and 240 pounds. His humerus
is only 2 long so I treat him like a shoulder disarticulation. He is
very active, works full time, and does his own yard work (Weedeater and
all). He has had decent success with the U2 but it can barely lift a
raincoat draped over the arm. He wears an OB wrist rotator (which
decreases lift capacity due to the additional weight) and the forearm
from Utah is never trimmed because his arms are so long.
I would like to hear from those that have used both, but will take any
feedback from those who use just the Boston. Thanks in advance for your
time and input.
