ORIGINAL POST:
What is your policy regarding charging for additional follow up
adjustments subsequent to the prescribing physician's initial approval
of the delivered orthosis? In other words, how long do you continue to
make additional modifications at no additional charge? I'll post
responses without names. Randy McFarland, CPO Fullerton, CA

RESPONSES:

90 Days

Nothing set in stone, but probably the 90 days set out by Medicare
standards

We follow scoliosis patients for 18 months. This includes replacing
straps, regluing pads, etc. If the brace is outgrown, they start over
and do not receive a discount for any subsequent braces. We do not
include torso interface shirts with the brace, they are purchased
separately.

Our company adheres to a ninety day
policy for adjustments at no additional charges, but
we take extreme care to document weight, volume, angle
or circumferential changes by measuring and recording
the affected area upon each visit. This will also
assist in quicker payment of adjustment charges from a
history of the documented changes.

Although Medicare guidelines are 90 days, we typically do follow-up,
without charging, for 6 months.

Post 90 days for adjustments and repairs. N/C for clinic visits
follow-ups were no modifications are made.

Our location does not charge for any F/u's. We feel it's part of the
service
that we are providing over the course of the treatment. The patient is
going
to get a new one in the future secondary to growth!

Three visits s/p initial fitting, then minimal $75.00 office
visit/adjustment/lab supplies fee

Our official policy is 60 days, but if after that it is just a minor
adjustment we usually still don't charge anything. If we need to
charge, it is usually based on our normal labor rate or specific HCPC
codes.

We expect our kids to outgrow a custom orthosis in approximately one
year. We service the orthosis for the full time the child is in it but
it does not require much maintenance.
