List members,

I recently was asked by parents of a Rhett's Syndrome child about
bracing her for kyphosis problem. Their concern is her poor posture,
sitting and standing for any period of time. She assumes the posture of
rounded shoulders and upper thoracic kyphosis (approximately 45
degrees). She also has a mild scoliosis (approximately 15 degrees left
thoraco-lumbar curve). All curves are flexible and correctable. She is 4
years of age.

Their questions:
1) Is bracing for her kyphosis beneficial at this age?
2) What type of wearing schedule would benefit the child?
3) Should they be concerned about dependency on the brace and muscle
weakening, if she wears the device for long periods of time?

My questions with regards to bracing for kyphosis for a child this age
and flexibility:
1) Do we brace the typical way (full body plastic spinal designs) or
try lower profile approach (ie Spine-Med type design)?
2) What type of wearing schedule is recommended for this age and diagnosis?

Any suggestions and your experiences with bracing this type of problem
would be greatly appreciated.
A summary of all the responses will be posted to the O and P list.

Thanks for you assistance.
