Thanks for the update on Roy Snelson. I also had the fortune of working with Roy while at Orthomedics in the early 80's. I will always remember one special time I spent with him during the orthotic certification exams I was taking at UCLA in 1983. If anyone took their orthotic exams during that time frame, they will remember that we had to measure, fabricate and fit a metal double upright KAFO in 8 hours at the exam. Even for someone who had done them before, that was hard to do. I had finished my oral exam the day before and drove to the Orthomedics main office in Brea. Roy was still there and we were talking about the exam. We were in the fabrication area and I asked Roy what the machine was next to the wall. He said it was a band bender. Hadn't I ever used one? No, I'd never even seen one. We didn't have one in the office I worked in. He took me over to the machine and told me to grab some band material and he spent about 20 minutes showing
me how to progressively bend the bands. The next day during the exam, I asked the examiner if I could use the band bender. He asked if I used it in my practice, and, of course, I said all the time. He said if I used it in my practice, go ahead. I was finished and fitted my patient at 1 PM. Thanks Roy, for that and all the other bits and pieces during the 4 years I worked for you and Sam.
  Respectfully,

The passing of Roy Snelson, CPO(E), on Monday, April 24, should remind
the orthotic and prosthetic profession of the enormous contributions
that he made to improve the careers of countless practitioners now and
in the future. He was a true visionary in so many areas of our
profession: patient care delivery models, progressive fabrication,
technological advancements, and professional standards, to name a few.

Roy had the ability to simplify the complex. I was very fortunate to
have worked for Roy for over 16 years and during that time he provided
leadership, opportunity, and mentorship both professionally and
personally. His generosity and caring for family, friends and employees
was legendary.

Roy was an AOPA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient in 1999. What he
gave to this profession in his life time has greatly improved the career
elevation of so many other lives. I am just one of a large number of
people to say, thank you Roy Snelson, CPO.
