Each week the Barr Foundation sends a post and salute to honor a person
(s) or Hope Donor (s) whom has made a great difference in a life.
This weeks tribute goes to Karl Entennman LPO, Hosmer and the Fillauer
Companies and our American and Allied Troops serving in Irag.
Hello! I am CPL Michael Molinaro currently serving in Iraq at FOB KAlsu
with the 2/4 BCT. I was referred to you by Maj. Bauer, our brigade surgeon.
Recently, an Iraqi man received a new hand. MAj. Bauer said that you guys
did almost all of the work involved. I am with our PAO section and am
writing a story on the event.
Lt.Caesar as I found him by MAJ Mike Cero (155 BCT Brigade Engineer), whose
wife is Dr. Susie Cero.
Dr. Susie Cerois an orthopedic surgeon in Washington State who asked
prosthetist Karl Entenmann's help whom contacted the Barr Foundation based
in Boca Raton,Florida.
COL Glasgow is the current commander of the 155BCT (during our OIF III
deployment, he was the Brigade XO). COL Glasgow initiated the project. He
and our Brigade Commander during OIF III, Brigadier General Augustus L.
Collins provided great support throughout the project.
LT Caesar lost his hand due to a VBIED blast and was found injured by Lt
Colonel John Rhodes whom commanded 155BCT infantry battalion. Members of
his battalion worked with the Iraqi Army battalion at Iskandariyah.
LT Caesar is a strong officer in the Iraqi Army. As a platoon leader and
staff officer, he was very well respected and recognized as someone who
would had great potential in shaping the Iraqi Army.
Procuring a prosthetic arm wasn't going to be like ordering a box of MREs.
We pursued several different avenues at the same time, given that our tenure
in OIF III was coming to a close. I took LT Caesar to Baghdad a couple
times to the Prosthetics Center in the IZ. SSG Chris Cummings had overseen
the creation and running of the clinic while he was deployed. The center
had done lots of leg prosthetics, but didn't have the capability to do an
arm. But, they were helpful in getting the proper measurements. Karl
Entenmann emailed the measurements that he needed to make the arm. We
emailed the measurements and a couple of pictures to him. We did the best
we could, given that none of us knew anything about prosthetics.
LT Caesar is one of the guys that is really making a difference there, and
will continue to do so. Karl Entenmann ,the Barr Foundation and the
Fillauer Companies (Hosmer) deserves a great thanks for this effort.
LT Caesar had a hook assembly, which is probably the most functional
substitute for a hand that he can have. But, Caesar thought his men would
perceive him as being a handicapped leader. So, he kept the hook wrapped
up. The prosthetic hand provides a normal appearance. Perception is
everything.
MAJ Bauer picked up the project and ran with it. His expertise and
enthusiasm in closing the deal was vital. COL Glasgow stayed on me about
getting the hook, and assisted in getting the ground and air transportation
priorities so I could get Caesar to the IZ a few times. MAJ Cero and his
wife connected us with Karl Entenmann who not only made the socket for the
hand components donated thru the Barr Foundation , but patiently educated us
on how to ensure Caesar's stump was appropriate, getting the measurements,
pictures, etc. I'm really happy that the project reached fruition.
