A total of twelve people in south Sudan received prosthetic assistance recently, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Kerry Miller CP, the Barr Foundation, and Ohio Willow Wood. BioConcepts, Scheck & Siress, Hanger (NC), William Nelson CP, Calvin Hoyle CP, and Duke University also made contributions.
Miller and her husband were part of a larger medical missions group to the remote villages of Lohotuk and Padak in South Bor County, Sudan. They traveled with medical personnel and others interested in bringing stable medical care to that remote region of east Africa.
Six of the patients received new Ohio Willow Wood prosthetic feet. They had previously received assistance from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) located several hundred miles away in Lokichogio Kenya. That facility will be closing in March 2006, as the Red Cross transitions post war in southern Sudan.
Causes for all twelve amputations fell into three categories: land mines, gunshot wounds, and snakebites.
Initially Mrs. Miller had volunteered her prosthetic services to Cutting Edge Foundation, a not-for-profit organization whose goal is to establish teaching hospitals across sub-Saharan Africa. The President of CEF, Dr. Bert Oubre, suggested that she come on this trip to see for herself the needs. With the closing of the medical center in Lokichogio, needs for adequate prosthetic care increase in the region.
