Most experienced and knowledgeable prosthetists and surgeons, will recognize
a minimal factor of 50% to a amputee's surgerical procedure in the
determination of obtaining a 100% goal to total prosthetic rehabilitation.

You may find it interesting, that no less than five amputees, featured in
all the national O&P magazines whom are representing several of the major
international prosthetic component manufactures in full page advertisements,
are not only manufacture representatives but, Ertl surgical recipients as
well !!!

Super Amps Neil Perry, Ron Mann, Matthew Henderson, Dan Sheret,William
Malmskog,AJ Johnson, Ron King, Patrick Vest and more have all been recently
featured in advertisements or in feature stories of several editions of the
O&P media publications. ALL happen to be recipients of the Ertl
Osteomyoplastic Amputation Procedure :)

Why does not the manufactures, of today's hi-tech components(OSSUR,College
Park Industries, Otto Bock Healthcare, etc) properly expose and promote in
their advertisements and features stories of their manufacturer reps and
Super Amps, and the Academy promote the concept that amputees, whom
initially receive proper amputation surgery, can better achieve obtaining
proper and full prosthetic rehabilitation ??

Every knowledgeable member of the amputee's dream team, prosthetist
,surgeon and physical therapist, recognizes that the intial proper
amputation surgery ,which among other things, can deliver weight bearing
characteristics for the amputee, is the foundation of obtaining 100%
successful prosthetic rehabilitation.

Is this not more important to promote than pricey components, gel liners and
proper O & P rehabilitation benefits.

Anticipating amputation: The case for communication

Forward-thinking surgeons are seeking input from prosthetists and other
practitioners in developing techniques that will improve functional outcomes
in amputees.

By: Charles Kupperman

Surgical techniques that fail to anticipate an amputee's functional needs
are in part to blame for a disappointing lack of improvement in prosthetic
outcomes over the last four decades. But a new generation of surgeons is
working to reverse this trend.

Prosthetic outcomes for amputees haven't improved over the past 40 years,
according to a new study by a team from the Rochester, MN-based Mayo Clinic.
Not only that, but rates of amputation appear primed to double by 2030, the
researchers warned. In their study, published in the October issue of the
Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, they predict an increase
in the rates of amputation from 28,000 to 58,000 per year over the next 27
years.

This is kind of a depressing thing for me, said Karen Andrews, MD, one of
the study's principal authors. Andrews, chair of amputee rehabilitation, had
expected the study to conclude that advances in prosthetic technology had
led to a significant improvement in outcomes.

Before her team compiled its research, Andrews had believed that 80% of
amputees ended up using prosthetic devices successfully. Instead, the
proportion was more like 32.4% total, or 47% for below-the-knee amputees and
13% for above-the-knee amputees.

Navy Seals, returning to active duty on the front lines after receiving an
Ertl amputations, football players returning to the game, policeman and
fireman returning to their jobs, kickboxers, stuntmen and bicyclists compete
professionally, , and everyday people, becoming Whole Again .......without
pain.

Coincidence ??

Why is the Ertl not being widely accepted by surgeons as a viable option to
amputation surgery ?
Money!!!

Reimbursement for a standard BK amputation in the USA averages less than
$1000 and generally is completed in less than 40 minutes vs. the Ertl
procedure which can be 3-4 hours and with the submission of the suggested
proper reimbursement codes (available at ErtlReconstruction.com) can be
$15,000-$20,000.

The shorter the time your surgeon performed your amputation the more likely
you will develop problems with your residual limb and prosthetic fittings in
the future, without reconstruction surgery.

What good are several $10K to $40K required prostheses in a lifetime,
without the benefit of a properly surgically prepared residual limb to
accommodate them ? Perhaps a properly surgically prepared limb may not
require as many socket modifications and replacements in a amputees life
time ?

Over 30 surgeons, who recognize the benefits, now perform the procedure (or
variations thereof) on a regular basis in the USA and abroad. They are
listed on the ErtlReconstruction.com) can web site as well as Ertl amputees,
and prosthetists that fit Ertl limbs.
