This week's salute goes to a combination of resources that together, made it
possible for a Iraq soldier to become Whole Again.
On January 17,2005 Washington state prosthetist Karl W.Entenaman LPO, posted
a solicitation on the O&P List Serve for donations of a left cable operated
hand and hook for the rehabilitation of a left BE amputee Iraq soldier a
American hospital in Bagdad (see below).
In less than 72 hours his request was answered by Jackie Bradford, Regional
Sales Manager,Hosmer Dorrance Corporation a subsidiary of The Fillauer
Companies in California.
One of the Barr Foundation's Where Hope Meets Help Donor Club members,
Hosmer Dorrance again raised to the occasion and donated the required
components thru the Barr Foundation for this effort.
If it were not for the benefits of the OANDP-LIST SERVE and O&P Digital
Technologies, who provides this valuable on line networking media, this call
for help would not have resulted to a successful and timely effort.
A physician in Bagdad provided the cast and measurements. Mr. Entenmann
donated his services and is finishing up the socket fabrication and
assembling the components for shipment to Iraq.
We will keep you informed of the outcome and final fitting... with photos !
Each week the Barr Foundation sends a salute to a person(s) or Hope Donor(s)
who has made a great difference in a life.
Such Whole Again stories will hopefully help make your weekend and to
remind you, knowing that most of you whom became professionals and industry
providers, got into this business to help people, that you are accomplishing
allot and are appreciated.

Subject: [OANDP-L] Need cable hand for Iraqi soldier
To my esteemed colleagues,
I have been asked to help in the treatment of an Iraqi soldier in Iraq who
is a left BE amputee. He had been fitted with a cable powered prosthesis
with a hook terminal device at the American hospital in Bagdad. He is a Lt
in the Iraqi army and apparently there is some concern about his ability to
lead his men because the prosthesis makes him look less able to lead. I
am aquainted with a physician here near Seattle who's husband is stationed
over there and she asked me if I could help. It appears that the prosthesis
is fairly conventional with fig 8 harness, triceps pad, dacron hinges,
friction wrist, and #7 hook. The prosthesis was made a bit long and he has
self modified the #7 hook to shorten it a bit. I would like to provide him
with a cable operated hand and a smaller hook. They originally thought I
could provide a myoelectic prosthesis but that would be impossible both
technically and cost wise. I am looking for a donation of a left cable
operated hand and !a shorter hook. The hand would need to be fairly large
because the circumferential measurement they sent to me is almost 10 inches.
I first questioned that but they sent a photo with the tape around the mp
joints and it's 9 7/8, so a size 8 or 9 would work. Does anyone have any of
these laying around that we could use?
Thank you all for sharing in this forum.
Sincerely,
Karl W. Entenmann, LPO
