I can't think of a more appropiate better tribute to all the folks that help
amputees than the two stories I send to you today.
This weeks salute goes to two individual practitioners and a manufacture,
all well known in the industry.
1) Otto Bock Health Care donated a 3R6O knee for 15 year old El Salvadorian
Melissa Renderos thru her sponsoring prosthetist,Wayne Koniuk CP and owner
of San Fran Prosthetic Services.
Two years ago, 13 year old Melissa Renderos was leaving her church in the
company of her 12 year old girlfriend and her grandmother, in the city of
San Salvador, capital of the Republic of El Salvador. Two taxis racing down
the street run over them and sped away. They were never caught.
Melissa's grandmother, the most fortunate among them, was knocked
unconscious and remained in a coma for several days, but later recovered.
Melissa's little girlfriend was killed instantly. Melissa herself suffered
horrible injuries that necessitated the amputation of her right leg above
the knee and her left foot above the ankle.
2) All Carmen wanted for Christmas was a leg. And she's getting it. I'm
ecstatic, says Carmen, 45.
It's a total miracle, says Maria Puente-Duany, who works with Carmen's
charity, the Caridad Center and the Migrant Association of South Florida.
She's absolutely thrilled. It's going to give her a new life.
Doctors amputated Carmen's right leg five years ago due to complications
from Ollier disease, a rare skeletal disorder that affects every bone in her
body and causes constant agonizing pain. But thanks to Hugh Panton of Hangar
Prosthetics and Orthotics, Carmen is now being fitted for a prosthetic leg,
which will enable her to quit her telemarketing job and find work that
brings in more income for her and her daughter Veronica, 16, an honors
student who would like to be a doctor.
Oh my God, says the charity's Veronica Bernardo. This is just fantastic.
Each week the Barr Foundation sends a salute to a person(s) or Hope
Donor(s) whom has made a great difference in a life.
Such Whole Again stories hopefully will help make your weekend and to
remind you, knowing that most of you whom became professionals and industry
providers, got into this business to help people, that you are accomplishing
allot and are appreciated.
