Dear List and Mr. Barr:

I would like to draw attention to what the Academy has done with its Consensus publications. They have begun to establish standards of practice in O&P. This is an important step in measuring what we do as practitioners. I personally am helping with a small project and know of a few others who also spend time with documenting outcomes/practices. Baby steps add up... each little paper adds to the literature. It is my opinion that we are at the stage that we need to continue to aggressively consolidate what has been published and use it to establish standard ways to approach patient care (i.e. the Academy's Consensus papers).

Unfortunately, a lot of O&P practitioners are resistant to this approach. They see it as an attempt to limit how they currently practice. However, I believe that O&P has skipped the important step of establishing a baseline for WHAT WE DO, so we can't build on it. We practically don't exist in the literature. What the Academy is doing is important.

There are still orthotists out there who pride themselves on making notes on exam table paper. Hmmm. What is so horrible about keeping accurate records about your patient interactions? It's good customer service at the least.
