The Florida Chapter of the Academy and the Florida Association of Orthotists
and Prosthetists (FAOP) held their combined annual meeting at the end of
July at the Sheraton Bal Harbour resort in Miami, Fla. The meeting was a
great success, filled with high quality professional education, camaraderie
and most of all fun.
Some of the highlights of the meeting include the inaugural presentation of
the Florida Distinguished Practitioner Award to Alan Finnieston, CPO as well
as the Lifetime Achievement Award to Fred Hampton, CP.
The event was kicked off with an Open Mic FAOP Idol, featuring live
entertainment provided by many of the attendees, including wonderful
performances by the band of FAOP entertainment chairperson Wallis W.T.
Farraday, CP. This year's FAOP Idol award winner was Richard Miller, CO
from Milwaukee, Wis. Miller got everyone into the groove when he played some
blues jams on his harmonica. His performance was a small preview of what
you'll see center stage at the Academy's Annual Meeting and Scientific
Symposium in Chicago, March 1-4. 2006.
An exciting presentation was given by Sam Phillips, CP, Dean of new O&P
program at St. Petersburg College. He announced that a new class of students
will be starting this fall and the ground breaking for the new 21,000 sq.
foot educational facility will take place soon thereafter. This was real
music to the ears of the Florida practitioners who have been working hard
for years to establish an O&P program in the state.
Another huge announcement was the commitment of the membership of both the
Florida Chapter and the FAOP for the organizations to donate $5,000 each
over the next five years to the Academy's College Fund to replenish the
$50,000 of seed money that was loaned for the establishment of the St.
Petersburg program. Outgoing FAOP President Paul Prusakowski, CPO, LPO,
FAAOP and outgoing Florida Chapter president Chester Littlefield, CPO stated
that It is the hope of the leadership of the Florida O&P associations that
this money will be loaned by the College Fund to other state chapters in
order to establish new O&P programs throughout the country.
