Hi all,
Thanks to all who wrote me regarding my patient who had a pancreas transplant and who is no longer diabetic. The responses I received suggested that if the physician cannot sign the certification for need for diabetic shoes stating that he or she is treating this patient for diabetes and that she needs the shoes, they are non covered by Medicare. Most simply said we are out of luck regarding Medicare because of the non diabetic diagnosis. Not diabetic? Not eligible for shoes from Medicare. Another suggested that since she is a partial foot amputee, I can do a toe filler (L5000) and throw in the shoes. Fine except they are custom shoes due to deformed feet. Too costly to throw in. And another suggested I send all documentation to Medicare stating that although she is not officially diabetic, her feet are still damaged from the diabetes. So, it's all over the place. Thanks.
