Here are the responses! Thank you all!
----------------------------------------
please post your responses. I'd be interested in
hearing what others have to say. This is
unfortunately as close to the best research out there,
to my knowledge, to hear from collegues anectdotal
evidence.
My experience so far in using the Juzo silver
shrinkers, the Medi relax liners, and products with
x-static such as knit rite's liner liners and
compresogrip ak shrinkers, has been mixed and hard to
decifer.
Compared to regular shrinkers, socks, and liners, in
general, there seems to be some truth behind the
claims. Then again it could have been the placebo
effect just knowing that this was supposed to help.
Bottom line- someone needs to do a blinded controlled
study with a test evaluating degree of pain.
----------------------------------------
Silver...

Call Knit-Rite about the silver they use in their socks. I've only used
these on one patient a year or two ago, but the patient did say he thought
it was of some benefit.
----------------------------------------
Hi Kristin,,,, Juzo has silver lined shrinker socks that are said to reduce
phantom pain, and Medipro/Medicos has some liners with silver impregnated
that are supposed to help during the day while wearing and the benefits
carry over the evening.....
I have one patient wearing bilateral medipro liners, with severe neuropathy
and phantom pain...... I had her wearing Alpha liners- my favorite-
......... but when it was time for her definitives, I decided to try the
Medipro - 60 day trial- and she says that they are great --- so much less
neuropathy and phantom pain than with the Alphas............
I like the 60 day trial.... we still have 2 weeks left.... I will let her
decide if she wants them or not.....
----------------------------------------
Doesn't Juzo make a Silver shrinker that they report helps with
phantom pain? Also, something by Medipro is out there too but it may be
their silicone liners series.

Re: Your inquiry on the O&P List, Here's some information on
phantom pain remedies from Don Cummings. To make a long story short, Don
and I are both on the ABC Board. I am a public consumer member. Don is a
CP working for Shriners Hospital in Dallas. He is a double amputee. I am
a single BK. All the information Don sent me is below in his message.
I've included my message also. I hope this helps a little bit. I saw
another ad for some other kind of sock with metal in it, or some
miraculous substance, but I still have never tried any of these
rememdies. Good luck.
----------------------------------------
We certainly trial farabloc if medications, PT electrical modalities,
desensitization, contrast baths, manual massage, distraction techniques,
etc do not work for phantom pain. There is one study which concludes
that farabloc increases circulation. At this point in the regime, if it
works, who cares whetherer it is clinically proven or not. I find that
approximately 30% of the people that I give it to report substantial
improvement. There is only one prosthetist in Vancouver who routinely
laminates it into the socket. None of the funding agencies will approve
it, so the patient self-funds it.

----------------------------------------
I have found these to be on the whole excellent. Some patients have
literally had life changing pain relief but others have had no discernable
benefit. I spend time investigating the cause of the pain with each
potential patient and often get them to write a journal recording intensity
of pain and external influences ie weather, environment, to see if there is
a pattern. I have given some patients loads of information about the sleeves
in the hope that it will stimulate a +ve mental reaction (placebo effect).
It should be noted that these socks do not affect every type of pain but can
have a real influence over certain kinds. It is a useful product and should
not be discarded too quickly.
I recently issued a medi relax liner with the same or similar steel grid
construction. Now in use for 4 months early results are good for my patient.

hope this helps

I hope this helps you a little and your patient a lot.

Yes there is. Medi has a nighttime sock and a liner which address phantom
pain. They are distributed through SPS and were on display at the AOPA
National in Vegas this week.
I'm not trying to make this sound like a commercial, but give us a call and
we can get you some more information.
----------------------------------------
Relax Liners for nighttime wear from Medi
----------------------------------------
Try Medi or SPS which sells Medi products. They have a silicone liner
with matrix that blocks electromagnetic rays, and supposedly helps to
reduce phantom pain.
They also sell some kind of sock
----------------------------------------
Medi the compression hose company has a silicone liner they are marketing as
a phantom pain reducer. It can be worn within the px or at night
----------------------------------------

Kristin - I am not 100% sure of this but I seem to recall something recently

about silver imbedded into liners for antibacterial reasons is also working
to reduce phantom pain. I can't remember where I saw this but I thought it
was very interesting (it may have been magnets?). I hope this is of some
help.
