I would like to thank those that responded to my request for info regarding the Silicone AFO. Special thanks also to Arthur Gaham who was particularly helpful answering all of my questions. Here is a list of responses.
I just saw your posting on the list server. The SAFO is made in England by Dorset Orthopedic and is a custom made device. There is a dedicated website www.safo.eu.com that has a lot of information regarding the SAFO. You can call me directly if you want to discuss this, I have fit many of these in our clinic with good success

I have had nothing but good experiences with Arthur Graham, the person at Next Step working most with the SAFO. They have been terrific in providing information and advice. The product itself is also terrific, within its limits. It cannot correct deformity because it does not have structural stiffness beyond variations in silicone durometer and thickness. For foot drop, particularly with bony anatomy, such as occurs in CMT cases, it is great. The 'invisibility' of the SAFO is better than other braces. The expense is prohibitive for most potential users (about $1800 per brace).

made in england--central fab fee is 1k-------might be available from canada sometime this year ----has a life span of about 2 years

The SAFO is manufactured by a company called Dorset Orthopaedic whom I currently work for as a CPO. Next Step who are a company based in Boston have been working with the SAFO for approximately 2 years and in particular Arthur Graham (CPO) has excellent experience with using this product in the US.
I have typically been using the SAFO for a wide variety of pathologies resulting with drop foot including; Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT), peroneal nerve trauma, incomplete spinal injurues, MD, MS, Stroke and CP to name a few. To date results have been excellent and feedback from patients has been extremely positive.
For more information on the SAFO there is a dedicated website www.safo.eu.com which has patient clips and abstracts of some of the research to date. Otherwise if you have further questions please don't hesitate to contact me at this e-mail address.
