Amputation Surgery conference at the next Academy meeting?

I believe the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists has been
working hard over the past few years to develop more rigorous programs for
their yearly meetings.

In view of these efforts, I would like to suggest that the Academy include a
seminar with discussion, about amputation surgery at their next meeting

I am sure many clinicians see poor amputations in their practice as well as
good ones.
There are a number of different surgical amputation approaches that are
either not widely known by surgeons, ignored by surgeons, or simply thought
to be controversial.

A discussion by a panel of surgeons, would allow a forum so that we can
learn what the consideration are. There may not be clear answers, but I am
sure many would like to hear the pros and cons of different surgical
approaches.

If some of these amputation techniques are truly superior, shouldn't we be
seeing them used in places such as Walter Reed and Brooke Army Medical
center as a rule?

I know of a pt that had a highly mobile fibula and rather than stabilizing
it, the surgeons performed a fibulectomy vs an Ertl or other bone bridge
technique This is the type of case that would be interesting to discuss from
a few perspectives.

The first International Conference of Advanced prosthetics , sponsored by
Ossur some years ago, was an excellent example of an interdisciplinary
conference that was well attended by surgeons, therapists, engineers and
prosthetists.

I think the whole P&O field would be rejuvenated by substantive meetings
that actively encourages and recruits participation by engineers , doctors,
and therapists. If these meeting could , in part be, co-sponsored by the
Academy of Surgeons, and the Physical Therapy association, that could allow
and encourage surgeons and therapists to attend for CEU's as well.

Please let me and the Academy know if you think this is something you would
like to see. The more enthusiasm there is, the more inclined the Academy
might be toward pursuing this. The Academy meetings require a lot of
planning and a meeting such as I am describing, is even more involved.
