19 year old Sarah Ashcraft from Moss Point, Mississippi, and student at East
Central High School, has allot to be thankful for these days.
Sarah, a congenital above knee amputee since birth, was recently fitted with
a computer assisted Otto Bock C-Leg prosthesis donated to her by a New York
benefactor ,Michael and Dawn Kimberly . The Kimberly's son , 27 year old
Brad, lost his fight with cancer early last year .
The hi-tech prosthesis, manufactured by Otto Bock Health Care in Minnesota ,
is the same as those fitted to returning US military personnel whom lost
limbs in Iraq.
Otto Bock donated the new shin component specifically for Sara's weight and
height since Brad Kimberly was 5'11' and 227 lbs. and Sarah is 5'3 140 lbs
!!
The prosthesis was donated by the Kimberly's to our non profit organization
,the Barr Foundation < <URL Redacted>> www.oandp.com/barr , with
hopes of us locating a suitable candidate for Brad's leg.
Sarah's father Garry stated :
Sara is nineteen now. She was born with multiple birth defects. She was
born without a hand (webbed) and her left leg was deformed which had to be
amputated above the knee. Sara also has learning disabilities. After over
fifty surgeries, Sara has two digits on each hand that she can pinch with
and is able to wear a prosthetic leg. The type of leg Sara wears now is
hard on her stump and is causing damage to her back. Sara ends up in a
wheelchair a lot of the time.Sara has been through a lot in her young life.
Not only growing up with her obvious conditions and all the surgeries she
has been through, her mother abandoned her when she was three years old.Sara
starts her last year of special education at East Central High School this
fall. The best gift she could possibly receive would be a leg that not only
allows her to walk correctly but that would prevent further damage to her
hip and back. I hope and pray you see it in your heart to help my daughter.
Thank you and God bless you.
Garry Ashcraft
Bobby Leaber ,certified prosthetist and owner of Adaptive Prosthetics,
Gulfport, Miss, wrote us back in May for help for Sarah and donated his
services after the C-Leg was donated by the Kimberly's. Sara was fitted on
July 27,2005 and is one happy camper.
Such Whole Again stories hopefully will help make your week and to remind
you, knowing that most of you whom became professionals and industry
providers, got into this business to help people, and that you are
accomplishing allot and are appreciated by those that you help.
Thank you Bobby, Mr. & Mrs..Kimberly and your son's gift, and to Otto Bock
Health Care.
