Good morning. Below are all replies received to my question about the
formula changes and availability of Ampu Balm. Possibly this will be of some
interest to others on our LIST. Thank you to all respondents.

Wanted to let you know that the Ampu-Balm is available through Hosmer in
either individual jars or by the case.  I checked with our production
department and we have not had any problems the supply of this product. Let
me know if you need more information.
Something to  do with a bad batch.   I got on a list with Pel.   Was
on it for several months.   Finally rec'd a shipment a couple weeks ago
in good condition

Would think the suppliers would know who they pay the bills to for product.
Why don't you call them, i.e.: Fillauer, Kingsley, Pel, Knit-Rite.  I think
the majority of the active ingredient is lanolin.  They have pure lanolin at
most pharmacies.  It has been used for cracking nipples from breast feeding
babies.

Good luck, and look forward to seeing your results posted on the list serve.
You may already be aware of this, and if so, please disregard. Ampubalm is
very similar to another product called Bag balm. Bag balm is used in the dairy
industry to protect the cows udders from becoming irritated during the
milking process. It is also used by people who make hand made quilts. My mother was
the founding President of the Greater San Antonio Quilt Guild. Quilters use it
to protect there hands from the abuse they take from sewing by hand all day.
Bag balm is different from Ampubalm because it has a scent (menthol, if my
memory is correct). It works great and you may be able to substitute it for
Ampubalm. it can be found at local supermarkets or drug stores/pharmacies. Good
luck.

For awhile there was a problem but Knit Rite assured me they have some in
stock. As an alternative, Udder Balm has lanolin, aloe vera, Vit. A and E
among other ingrediants. Bag Balm is easier to purchase locally in some
parts of the country and provides the same sort of benefits. Good luck.

The old ampubalm was acquired by SPS many years ago, they then changed
the formula, but not for the better.  The new formulation was not as
effective, lacking the anti-microbial, anesthetic, and drying agents of
the original.  The one plus of the new formula is it has less odor, the
old had a lot of lanolin so the salve smelled of mutton.
I agree with you the old salve was almost miraculous, the new just
okay.  I haven't purchased any for several years, didn't find it much
better the OTC products, so I can't comment on availability or quality.

Know what your saying, I to liked to use it myself. Now the VA has stopped
issuing it also. However, I remember talking to a person that seemed to know
what he was talking about and he said that he was raised on a sheep farm and that
the ampubalm was made with sheep oil in it because of the smell for what
ever that's worth.
Now having said all that i just went to my closet and got an old jar and this
is what it says:
contains- Mutton Tallow, Paraffin, Benz'  Alcohol, Fragrance
on the back label it says: Mfg for Southern Prosthetic Supply Co.
PO Box 406 Alpharetta, GA 30201
                                           sold by prosthetic Facilities

Also if you really want the formula for it the Patent Office No is 865,810
Trade Mark AMPU-BALM
 Hope this helps you
