Six U.S. Paralympians Nominated for the 2005 ESPY Awards
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – All six nominees have trained hard and competed
even harder, but only two will win. Six U.S. Paralympians have been
nominated for the 2005 ESPY Awards in the Best Athlete with a Disability category.
This year, for the first time, the category has been split into separate male
and female categories. The U.S. Paralympians who have been nominated are:
Male:
Rudy Garcia-Tolson (Bloomington, Calif.), Swimming
Paul Martin (Broomfield, Colo.), Cycling & Triathlon Competitor
Marlon Shirley (San Diego, Calif.), Track & Field
Women:
Cheri Blauwet (Menlo Park, Calif.), Track & Field
Erin Popovich (Butte, Mont.), Swimming
Tandem Cycling Team – Karissa Whitsell (stoker/Eugene, Ore.) & Katie
Compton (pilot/Colorado Springs, Colo.)

Rudy Garcia-Tolson - Swimming
2004 Achievements:
Set men’s world record and won gold in the 200m individual medley at the
2004 Paralympic Games.
Paul Martin - Cycling
2004 Achievements:
Won bronze in the men’s 4km individual pursuit and silver in the men’s team
sprint at the 2004 Paralympic Games.
Marlon Shirley – Track & Field
2004 Achievements:
Won gold in the 100m, silver in the 200m and bronze in the long jump at the
2004 Paralympic Games.
Cheri Blauwet – Track & Field
2004 Achievements:
Won gold in the 800m and bronze in the 5000m at the Paralympic Games. She
also won the 2005 Los Angeles and Boston marathons.
Erin Popovich – Swimming
2004 Achievements:
Won seven gold medals at the 2004 Paralympics Games: 200m individual
medley, 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 50m butterfly, 4x100m freestyle relay,
4x100m medley relay and 50m freestyle.
Karissa Whitsell (stoker) & Katie Compton (pilot) – Cycling
2004 Achievements:
Whitsell, a blind track cyclist, and sighted pilot, Katie Compton, won gold
in the individual pursuit, gold in the time trial & road race, silver in the
tandem kilometer time trial and bronze in the tandem sprint at the 2004
Paralympic Games.
The last U.S. Paralympian to win an ESPY Award was Marlon Shirley in 2003
for “Best Athlete with a Disability.”
The winners will be announced during the 2005 ESPY Awards on July 13, at
the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, Calif. The show will be televised by ESPN
on Sunday, July 17 at 9 p.m. (EST).
