Amputees Of America First
The Barr Foundation along with the Faro Foundation and St.Vincent of Paul
University Hospital of Medellin,Columbia just completed a pilot program for
the prosthetic rehabilitation of 12 amputees on June 29 and are completing
20 more in in the near future.
Euro International Inc. /Streifeneder graciously provided donated components
and supplies to Columbian practitioner Dr. Juan Pablo Valderrama of O&P
Orthopraxis LTDa. for the pilot program and beyond.
Carlos Agudelo,a Columbian national, currently Miami USA resident and agent
for Isabella Shipping Co., coordinated the shipping of the components
without cost and provided dollar donations for the effort.
We would also like to thank Ms. Alba Rojas and the technicians from
Laboratoria Gilete in Bogotá who made the journey to Medellin in assisting
the effort and for the excellent amputee workshop they held for Columbian
technicians and the amputees whom applied and were approved for the pilot
program.
On Wednesday June 28, the St.Vincent of Paul University Hospital conducted a
comprehensive medical symposium in the hospital auditorium ,on prosthetic
rehabilitation and surgical techniques. Over 200 people, the international
press, national television media , prosthetists and amputees participated.
The Barr Foundation, after coordinating several assistance programs outside
of the Americas for several years, is currently focused these days on
opportunities to rehabilitating Amputees of the Americas First.
We have concluded that amputee assistance programs coordinated and oversight
provided by the Barr Foundation, based in South Florida, can be better
served to initiate and establish sustainability for rehabilitation in these
regions of The Americas.
The initiatives established in these countries of Central and South America,
Cuba and Mexico, where the need is great,
can be better coordinated in regard to the challenges often faced with safe
secure delivery of donated supplies, customs and duties, politics and other
obstacles and can be far less complex than those efforts we have experienced
in Europe, Asia and the Orient.
Having just visited Columbia for the first time, of all the many countries
the Barr Foundation has been involved in providing prosthetic assistance,
never have I participated and personally witnessed such a well coordinated
effort.
In spite of its incorrect reputation, my visit to Columbia was safe and
delightful experience.
Medellin having over 40 clinics and hospitals, the most qualified doctors in
the region and excellent medical services,
have made this city the Latin American health capital. Never have I seen
such a modern and well equipped Hospital in Central or South America.
Medellin deserves the reputation as the city for Health With No Boundaries.
The Barr/FARO Foundation pilot program has been highly successful because of
the support provided by suppliers, shippers, St.Vincent of Paul University
Hospital and the magnificent hospitality of the Columbian people.
Look for future coverage and photographs of the event in the O&P media.
We look forward to continue the Barr/FARO Foundation program with St.Vincent
of Paul University Hospital, along with our domestic assistance program
providing 150 amputees annually in the USA with prosthetic rehabilitation
thru sponsoring prosthetists.
Each Friday the Barr Foundation sends a post salute of a person (s) or Hope
Donor (s) whom has made a great difference in a life.
Such Whole Again stories hopefully will help make your weekend and to remind
you, knowing that most of you, who became professionals and industry
providers, got into this business to help people and that you are
accomplishing allot and are appreciated.
Have a great July 4th weekend,
Mucho Gusto,
Tony Barr
