Are you able to evaluate and provide help for this individual or recommend
a qualified prosthetist within the European region to do so?
The Barr Foundation would consider providing the necessary funds for
completing Mr. Hansmann prosthetic rehabilitation presuming he is a good
candidate.
He is located In Hollboom Germany but I believe it is near the border
region of the Netherlands in West Germany and 200km from Cologne Germany.
We would appreciate a reply or referral to have him evaluated.

Dear Mr Barr:
Thank you for the hope our conversation gave me this afternoon. We have
been so concerned for Paul.
The following is information concerning Paul as you requested:
Paul Hansmann
49843 Uelsen
Hollboom 17 Germany (01149) 5942-886
Paul, 53 years of age, had to have his right leg amputated in January 2004
below the knee and then more was removed in the summer of 2004 to above the
knee. I believe the first surgery was due to circulatory problems and the
second to infection in the stump. The amputations were carried out in Paris,
Texas. The doctor there who had been following his case had told him last
fall that the second surgery had healed well and was ready to be fitted for
a prosthesis. The problem in doing so at that time was financial as he has
no insurance nor SSI.
In January of 2005 Paul returned to Germany as his passport needed renewing
as well as his visa and he needed to check on his elderly mother who lives
alone in Hollboom since the the death of her husband several years ago. His
visa was denied by the Dallas area INS, but it has been appealed by the
circus and was sent by Dallas to INS in Washington, DC last August 2004. In
Germany Paul is not eligible for insurance as he must work first for one
year there before he would be so.
Paul is a trainer and presenter of horses and came to the US over 10 yrs ago
when Carson & Barnes Circus (out of Hugo, OK) bought an act of 6 Friesian
stallions from Holland which Paul had trained and presented in circuses in
Europe.
Most circuses (except highly corporate shows like Ringling, Cirque du
Soleil, and the Big Apple) do not provide their employees with benefits or
insurance and circus salaries are incredibly small and seasonal. Paul had no
salary to speak of last year (received room and board) nor does he have any
savings or current income. He is a conscientious and hard worker and wants
very much to continue working.

If you need further information please let me know.
As I mentioned in our conversation, I am a Little Sister of Jesus (we also
have a website which I believe is www.littlesistersofjesus.com or you could
look under Charles de Foucauld, our founder). Our first communities were
with the Touareg nomads in the Sahara desert. When we began to grow as a
community we quickly became international and present in many poor or
marginalized populations. With our nomad roots we also began travelling with
circuses in 1961 in Europe. This marks our 50th year of presence in the US
and this is our 27th on the road with circuses here (we have travelled with
4 different shows over the years and have had a variety of jobs from sewing,
cooking, shopping, selling t shirts and other souvenirs and concessions,
seating the handicapped, etc as our means of support and way of sharing with
people).
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Gratefully yours,
little sister Jo
