This week's Barr Foundation salute goes to the family of Brad Kimberly of
New York who donated a C-Leg to another above knee amputee located in
Mississippi. Although Brad Kimberly was only 27 years old when he lost his
fight to cancer last December, his life lives on with his family's gracious
memorial gift of the C-Leg donated to another deserving individual.
The Barr Foundation salutes Brad, his family and the sponsoring prosthetist,
Bobby Leaber, CPO who will be donating his services in fabricating a new
socket and providing appropiate C-Leg components and gait training for
Sarah Ashcraft and 18 year old high school student.
The following is excerpt from Sarah's father letter to the Barr Foundation.
Hello,
I am writing with the hope that you will be able to help my daughter, Sara
Ashcraft, obtain a suitable prosthetic
leg.
I am total disabled myself and we live on my social security and veteran's
pensions so I am unable to get her the leg she really needs. Sara is
eighteen now. She was born with multiple birth defects. She was born
without a hand(webbed) and her left leg was deformed which had to be
amputated above the knee. Sara also has learning disabilities.
After over fifty surgeries, Sara has two digits on each hand that she can
pinch with and is able to wear a prosthetic leg. The type of leg Sara wears
now is hard on her stump and is causing damage to her back. Sara ends up in
a wheelchair a lot of the time.
Sara has been through a lot in her young life. Not only growing up with her
obvious conditions and all the surgeries she has been through, her mother
abandoned her when she was three years old.
Sara starts her last year of special education at East Central High School
this fall. The best gift she could possibly receive would be a leg that not
only allows her to walk correctly but that would prevent further damage to
her hip and back. I hope and pray you see it in your heart to help my
daughter.
Thank you and God bless you.
