ACA Continues to Reach Out To New Amputees

By - Meredith P. Goins, ACA Marketing/Outreach Coordinator

The Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) continues to reach out to new
amputees by surveying hospitals and rehabilitation centers by telephone
in those states with a high proportion or incidence of amputation, such
as California.

Our goal is to gather demographic information on amputees in the state,
including the total number of amputees seen, their age and ethnicity.
Not only does this make facilities aware of the ACA, it allows us to
gather statistics to better serve the amputee population. In just over
four months, the ACA has reached over 5,000 new amputees in this
fashion.

In compliance with HIPPA, the ACA will not request information on each
individual amputee, just overall numbers for the population served. For
the purpose of this survey, a new amputee is someone who has had an
amputation or revision surgery in the past 12 months.

We are also asking these medical facilities if they would like to
receive our Because We Care sample to review. This packet of
information contains our award winning publications First Step: A Guide
for Adapting to Limb Loss and inMotion the magazine, along with targeted
fact sheets and general information describing the ACA and who we serve.

Professionals who complete this survey and mention COPA will receive a
free Senior Step ($15 value!) along with your Because We Care sample
packet. Just mention that you are a member of COPA in the comments
field on the survey form when you mail or fax back in to the ACA!

The ACA will continue to survey other states throughout the nation in
the coming year. If you know others who would like to participate,
please have them contact Meredith P. Goins, marketing/outreach
coordinator at <Email Address Redacted> or call toll-free
888/AMP-KNOW ext. 8135.

Founded in 1986, the Amputee Coalition of America (ACA) is a national
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The mission of the ACA is to reach out to people with limb loss to
empower them through education, support and advocacy. With a grant from
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 1997, the ACA
established the National Limb Loss Information Center (NLLIC), the
nation's only comprehensive source of information for people living with
limb differences. For more information, visit www.amputee-coalition.org
