A Message from the Academy's Executive Director . . .
The Academy has come a long way in recent years. When I joined the
Academy as Executive Director in August 1997, there were less than 1300
members compared to the more than 2700 today... that year, the Annual
Meeting also had about 1300 participants. The one just completed
successfully in Orlando with ACPOC was our largest number ever, 1751.
Along the way the Academy has obtained two $1M grants and is line to
receive a third. The plethora of activities funded by the grant has and
will continue to benefit the profession for many years to come. And the
launch of our new quarterly publication, Academy-TODAY in cooperation
with the O&P EDGE, and the new Online Learning Center will both increase
member opportunities for continuing education and enhanced skills.
So much has been achieved, however, once a plateau has been reached, the
natural thing to do is to determine the next plateau and begin a new
journey. In doing so, the Academy will need new leadership to take it to
that next level...a new set of skills and expertise.
To do so with the least impact on current activities, and to allow the
Academy leadership to begin an immediate nationwide search, I will be
leaving the Academy this week. After a short vacation, I will begin my
search for new challenges with other small-staffed associations. This is
a normal part of every association's continuity. Every Executive
Director knows when it is time to step aside and this is my time.
I am so proud of what the Academy has accomplished in the last
seven-plus years. It has been an incredible journey for all. Thank you
to all who have been part of it.
