I recently submitted a request for ideas for an 78 y/o gent, Parkinson's,
with 15 degrees of knee extension limitations and 30 degrees of semi-rigid
genu-varum, with severe DJD and pain. I had some replies for a G2 ko (which
I feel will have insufficient leverage, G2 kafo's which I feel will have
insufficient structural strength with the poly design, and medial and
lateral bar kafos with G2 like straps or simple knee control pads. I liked
the latter suggestions though I feel the effect of the spiraling varus
control strap will be lost with the knee flexion condition the gent has.
I did a check socket with the foot inverted a bit in the casting to maintain
the tibia over the foot a bit more, as many of these varus conditions seem
to have an overpronation component. I was very happy with the 30 percent
realignment on this rigid-semi rigid knee, and I think I will use 2 uprights
for with locking capable knees and prepreg.
The static design of the check socket leads me to err on the side of care
and incorporate locks to accommodate any loading changes as flexion
increases in stance, the gent is a bit ataxic like and the medial condyle
may allows unpredictable dropoff and and may create intolerable pressures on
this non adjustable laminated prepreg lay in the lateral infra and supra
wall area at the knee.
Which leads me to my second request if there is a better joint for this than
the Becker 1006 with solid lockable degrees of knee flexion if needed? I
will post again Bruce Russell CO
