ORIGINAL POST ( I intended to refer to open shelving as opposed to
locked cabinets)
Dear List members.
In reviewing the HIPAA requirements for security of patient files, it
appears that we need to have a lock on doors between the files and
anyone who has no need to see them.. (including some of our staff).
Here is the website for one type of lock that won't require a key for
each time you go through it. These locks run $250 and up.

Any other solutions you have come up with for this challenge? I'll post
responses.

(Before I get to the responses, remember that AOPA offers info.
regarding HIPAA security & compliance)
RESPONSES
You must be kidding me. Solution? Yeah, realize that the HIPPA Police
are not waiting around the corner just waiting to come in and inspect
your facility. There is not one doctor's office, not one hospital, not
one facility that I attend where I can just walk in anywhere I want and
view any file that exists. Nobody is going nuts locking up files.
It's our impression that a locked file cabinet will suffice.
Believe it or not, I just received the following E mail, which I
originally thought one of you sent as a joke!!
