Dear List Serve:
I am like the radio talk show participate who states Long time listener,
first time caller!. I have long lurked the O & P list serve, but now have a
cause I cannot remain silent. For many years I rode high on my achievements as an
ABC certified practitioner and more recent as a member of the first class of
AAOP Fellowship inductees. I was proud to be a part of the Microprocessor
Symposium at Walter Reed Medical Center sponsored by the Academy at which the
virtues of microprocessor technology was taught to the Department of Defense to
benefit our returning heroes from Iraq.
But, I now am shocked, embarrassed and angry to learn that our Academy's
Board of Directors have sided with the APTA, stating in a February 11, 2005,
letter from AAOP President, David Morreto, that they will not oppose Direct Access
Legislation at this time. This statement is in direct violation of the
policy adopted by AOPA and comes at a critical time at which Federal legislation
is being considered and debated. This split in the O &P community weakens our
business position and threatens our autonomy in our traditional referral
sources. It is simply wrong of the Academy to do this and puts all of us in O & P
in jeopardy.
In my 33 years as a practitioner and business owner, I have never felt more
betrayed. I suggest that the Academy and their board reconsider this
ridiculous position before we are all employed by our physical therapy colleagues.
