I have a 238 lbs male in need of an AFO with a dorsi-stop and a plantar-stop. We talked about pros and cons of this choice vs a solid ankle, but decided the jointed would be the best choice. He's been wearing a plantar stop AFO for 9 years, has very little plantarflexion strength and walks with drop-off at the end of stance. His dorsiflexors are also weak.
What in your opinion is the strongest, yet lowest profile double action thermoplastic ankle joint?
Thanks for you time, Sue Ewers, CPO
We here at Freedom Fabrication frequently use Becker's SL-2810 and SLI-2825 with no uprights. that is, just the joint head and the nyu stirrup pulled into the plastic. you can use the rivet holes in the joint head and tap them for a 10-32 screw, to secure the joint head to the plastic upper shell. This makes a pretty strong unit, with as little bulk as can be expected from a device of this type.
Of the thermo insertion type joints we have used the Camber axis seems to fair the best.

With the Gaffney hinge I would add their dorsi assist component and a posterior drsi restraint strap. Keever Wallace, CO
I have rumenated this question quite a bit and would have to say the bock Active ankle MG-AC1 Townsend has a ti model but it is bulky though lite weight.Fillauer makes one but it is similar. You have a big guy and you may just want to go becker Ti and stirrup inless you feel he is a lite user. Either way I do not use any of them alot because of the end compliance. Let me know the responses. Bruce Russell CO
We have our double action ankle joints (020884 w/position pins or 020882 w/springs) that we use for bigger patients in thermoplastics. These particular joints we incorporate PolyCar-C in these and have had great sucess. If you would like to know more about these or any thing else please contact me.Thanks Steve Hughes Director Custom Fabrication Fillauer Companies 800-251-6398 ext. 267 <Email Address Redacted>
We manufacture an double action ankle joint called the Meridian AROM ankle joint. We have three sizes, and I would recommend the Heavy Duty size for your patient. They are made from high strength 300 series stainless steel. If you would like more information please call me at 800-821-9529. Thanks, Jason L. Try the RAD (restorative application design – 541-472-0776) joints out of Grants Pass Oregon. It is a titanium plantar stop joint, which can be fabricated also as a dorsi stop joint. Then place an adjustable plantar stop over the Achilles. There you have light-weight double action adjustable stops.
