The story unravels at www.ertlreconstruction.com
< <URL Redacted>> via the Papers and Articles link re :
January 7, 2005 Boston Globe article describing recent amputee statistics
and application of new prosthetic computer aided technology (specifically
the Utah Arm and the Otto Bock C-Leg ) which benefits returning military
personnel from the Mid East wars whom have lost limbs.
The article reports on the prosthetic advancements in the field and what
above knee (transfemoral) prosthetic components and technology is being used
on returning amputees from the war.
I would be the first to providing 100% support in fitting returning military
(and civilians ! ) with the best & proven prosthetic technology available
today, regardless of the cost.
I would also be the first to support and prioritize the application of the
best amputation surgical procedures to salvage all functioning limbs and
joints that would be compatible with today's hi-tech lower extremity
components. We know of no device presently manufactured or even conceived
that can take the place of a human knee joint and tibia of 3 or more in
length.
Not only are the statistics reported at 199 amputations, nearly double the
amputation numbers of any other war , (Viet Nam stats not mentioned ? )
they appear considerably lower and inconsistent with other statistic
reports of those injured military personnel returning from Afghanistan and
Iraq.Perhaps the statistics reported are only military personnel whom have
underwent transfemoral amputations ?
The report reads like a commercial advertisement specifically for the
C-Leg. One amputation is one too many, however the below questions remain
unanswered :
Are Walter Reed Army Hospital surgeons fully considering all surgical
procedures available to our injured military without regard to the possible
benefits and application of certain hi-tech computer aided components ?
Why do Navy and Air Force surgeons routinely perform the Ertl Procedure, or
acceptable variations thereof ,and Army surgeons at WRAMH typically do not?
