NLLIC Offers New TTY Number for Hearing-Impaired

In accordance with the requirements of the National Limb Loss Information Center (NLLIC) grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a TTY connection to the NLLIC was made available for deaf or hearing-impaired individuals in January 2001.

The TTY, an acronym for teletypewriter, was invented by Weitbrecht Modem in 1963, enabling people with hearing loss the world over to use the telephone for the first time.

The NLLIC's TTY number was originally the same as its facsimile number. To better serve individuals with limb loss, however, the NLLIC now offers a dedicated TTY line. The new number is 865/525-4512.
