Amputee Coalition of America seeks PALS Trainers
PALS or Promoting Amputee Life Skills is a research study sponsored by
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Johns Hopkins
Bloomberg School of Public Health and the University of Washington along
with the Amputee Coalition of America are conducting this study.
A PALS trainer is responsible for delivering an eight-week series of
180-minute self-management sessions and one booster session to amputees
in their designated training area. The session times will be determined
by the support group. The trainer will have a facilitator to assist
with logistical functions. Trainers will be required to participate in a
3-day training and certification workshop January 13-16, 2005 in Las
Vegas, Nevada. All travel expenses will be paid for this workshop. An
honorarium is provided for group facilitation.
At this time, trainers are needed in the following cities:
Arvada, CO
Fort Collins, CO
Philadelphia, PA
Cincinnati, OH
Centreville, VA (near DC)
Las Vegas, NV
Rockville, MD
Albany, IL (near Chicago)
Boiling Springs, PA
Fresno, CA
Additional cities will be added by the end of November. Applicants with
the following qualifications are encouraged to apply:
* Professional background in psychology, social work, nursing,
physical therapy, prosthetics, or related field
* Prior experience with group facilitation and/or adult education
* Effective verbal and written communication
* Familiar with limb loss issues
PALS is a 10-week educational program designed for people with limb loss
to help them learn skills that will improve their quality of life. We
are asking members of approximately 50 amputee support groups nationwide
to join the study. Groups in the study will be randomly assigned to
attend either a PALS course or their usual support group meeting.
Results from this study will tell us how well the program can work to
improve the life of people with limb loss.
