Mary Free Bed Orthotics and Prosthetics is located on the campus of Mary Free Bed Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Serving the outlying clinics, schools, hospitals, and the outpatient population, our organization is the largest Orthotic and Prosthetic department in West Michigan. Our residency program primarily takes two Orthotic residency students per year. Residents usually join our team in early January and or in late May but these times can vary. Currently we have an opening beginning January, 2005.
The advantages to spending your residency at our rehabilitation setting are multifaceted. Over the period of one year, students are gradually integrated into patient management; we do not bring on residents to fill clinical voids. Our program is designed on a quarterly structure which allows the student to observe, assist, obtain semi independence, and then function independently the last quarter. The program has these rough guidelines but each residency is tailored to individual experience level. With 18 clinical staff in Orthotics and Prosthetics you will receive exposure to many different approaches to clinical management while developing your own clinical skills. Our clinical patient load is ideal for someone just entering the field as it is diverse and offers unique cases on a daily basis. We are not an AFO factory!
Mary Free Bed has our own central fabrication facility conveniently located a half block off campus. With eight Orthotic technicians working there, fabrication will be a part of your experience as well.
We are located one floor above a regional clinic that offers monthly and weekly clinics in children's ortho, scoliosis, comprehensive mylo, muscular dystrophy, brain injury, spinal cord, limb differences, and botox to mention just a few. Also located on campus is a full gait analysis center, custom wheelchair division, an assistive technology center and all the disciplines associated with rehabilitation.
If your primary interest is a well rounded residency in an environment conducive to learning, Mary Free Bed is an awesome place to spend a year or two.
We encourage you to come early and spend your clinical hours with us; quite often there is an opportunity to stay beyond the year's residency and get through your boards.
