Hello
All over the country amputees are running in their local 5k's, 10k's or
even half and full marathons. Now, amputees can come together and face off
in a fun, fast and flat course designed to create a platform for amputees to
test their endurance against each other.
The Open Air MRI Silver Strand Half Marathon is host to the Ossur National
Leg Amputee Half Marathon Championships in which a prize purse of $5,000 is
offered to the top three male above and below knee amputees and the top
three female above knee and below knee amputees. This will also be the first
year that a 5-kilometer distance will be offered in conjunction with ½
marathon. The 5km (3.1 miles) could serve as the stepping stone race for
the next generation of ½ marathon runners!
The beautiful scenic course from Coronado Island to Imperial Beach is
beautiful and FLAT, making it the perfect venue to have a fast race. The
flat course is perfect for beginners and great for veterans who want to set
a personal record. The action takes place on Nov 14th in San Diego, CA
This event is part of the Challenged Athletes Foundation's Catch a Rising
Star Program which is designed to help people with disabilities reach their
physical fitness goals through mentorship and fitness resources provided by
CAF.
I strongly encourage you to identify one or two of your patients who have
expressed interest or who are actively running to look into competing at
this event. It is for amputees of ALL ages and abilities. The idea is to
provide a fun opportunity for amputees to race against world class runners
like Paul Martin and Sarah Reinertsen in a non intimidating and motivational
environment. If anyone needs help with their training, they can email Clint
Mabry at <Email Address Redacted> and he can set them up on an online
training program. Not all amputees will go to the Paralympic Games. Not all
amputees will participate in golf. There are not a lot of opportunities for
them to compete against each other - so please help us promote this event
and get more amputees active!
For more information, please visit www.challengedathletes.org or reply to
this email and we will send you some entry forms. The Ossur National Leg
Amputee Half Marathon Championships is presented by the Challenged Athletes
Foundation and sponsored by Ossur, Hanger Orthotics & Prosthetics, SCOPe and
RGP Prosthetic Research Center.
The Ossur National Leg Amputee Half Marathon Championships course records:
Fastest man below-knee: Paul Martin, 1:29:52
Fastest woman below-knee: Amy Dodson, 1:58:06
Fastest man, bilateral above-knee: Rudy-Garcia Tolson, 2:24:00
Fastest woman above-knee: Sarah Reinertsen, 2:12:32
Fastest man above-knee: Tom Martin, 1:48
Thanks for your support in helping CAF find the athlete within us all!
