Hi to everyone out there. I am requesting feedback on some thoughts I have
been mulling over and discussing with others
It appears we have an interesting situation in the area of P&O standards for
practitioner competency and the pathway required to reach what we all could
accept as the preferred way to develop the acceptable clinically based
practitioner in our field. This is often referred to as the
Prosthetist/Orthotist, Meister, Certified Orthotist/Prosthetist and also a
Category I practitioner.
At the moment it appears there is a foundation of an agreed standard in
Europe and within the ISPO community in general that the Category I
Professional Profile should be the accepted norm (ISPO European Conference
for Education in Prosthetics and Orthotics April 2004).
On the other hand, in the United States, there appears to be a fragmentation
of this standard where there exists multiple pathways to reaching this
so-called Category I standard. Of course the one I am referring to is the
acquisition of the certified credential without going through the pathway of
education and practical experience that historically has been in place.
After examining what has happened with the BOC credentialed practitioner
being now able to purchase an ABC certification certificate in either
Prosthetics and/or Orthotics it brings me to the logical conclusion that
there must be an examination of where we are going with our standards. This
can also be applied to the P&O schools not only in the USA but also Canada,
where the various programs seem to have many dissimilarities in length of
the program and also in the content and delivery of curriculum. My opinion
is that this should be discussed on a professional level internationally
with the national and commercial interests removed.
I am very interested in the opinions that exist in our community on this
matter. I would appreciate a discussion on this topic in the listserver.
