Academy information update for the Orthotic Prosthetic Profession:
The American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists has been extremely
busy with several exciting activities.
* The Academy partnered with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in a
July meeting held in Bethesda, Maryland on the methods of conducting State
of the Science conferences for the profession of orthotics and prosthetics.
This meeting was chaired by Co-Principal Investigators Doug Smith, MD and
John Michael, CPO, M.Ed, FISPO, FAAOP along with invited experts
from within the O&P community and National Institutes of Health. Also in
attendance were Past President Don Katz, CO, FAAOP and current Vice
President Gary Berke, MS, CP, FAAOP. Both Don and Gary have been
leaders in the formation of the CSOP's (Clinical Standards of Practice)
which will
be renamed State of the Science Conferences (SSC's).
* CSOP # 4 on the Diabetic Foot was held last week in California.
Nancy Elftman, CO, FAAOP, Chaired the conference. The conference was very
successful and work has begun on the initial outline report.
* CSOP # 3 Plagiocephaly, which was Chaired by Deanna Fish, MS,CPO,
and completed in April, will be published as a supplement to the JPO in
near future.
* The 2005 Annual Academy Meeting, which will be co-located with ACPOC
(Association of Children's Prosthetic Orthotic Clinics) March 16-19,
2005 at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort, Orlando, Florida, promises to be
even better than last year....keep an eye out for upcoming mailings
describing the outstanding presenters and clinical sessions being planned.
*ONLINE PCE Course almost ready: The first PCE online course developed
from the findings of CSOP #1 (Scoliosis and Scheuermann's Kyphosis) is in
the final stages of testing. Check out further details from the Academy's
Online Learning Center which can be found on the Academy's website
www.oandp.org.
*Academy joins O & P Community Group: The American Academy of
Orthotists and Prosthetists has joined forces with six other O & P
associations in
an effort to present a strong unified O & P voice in response to CMS's
solicitation for nominations to serve on the Program Advisory Oversight
Committee (PAOC) for Competitive Bidding. The Community Group includes: The
American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists, NAAOP, NCOPE, ABC, Hanger,
POINT, and BOC. Details regarding CMS's appointees from the nominations to
the PAOC are not yet known. The Academy will keep it's members
informed of any updates regarding this Competitive Bidding process.
