I have a 19 year old spina bifida patient who is in need of assistance
when cycling. He is very active and very ambulatory. He does not wear
any type of orthotic device now, and gets around pretty well. Recently
he has taken up cycling. He cycles 5 times a week and competes in local
races. He would like to start training to compete nationally however,
he tires easily and notices that when he is tired, his heels drag as he
is pedaling. He has weak to fair plantarflexors and the harder he
works, the quicker he tires out. He is looking for something that will
give him plantarflexion assistance so that he has the strength to power
through the pedal and keep his heels from dragging. He did tell me that
he has been taping his ankles before each race and that this is helping.
I was wondering if anyone has come across a similar case or if anyone
had any suggestions as far as assisting his plantarflexion so he can
have a more powerful push through when pedaling? Any comments or
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
