OSSUR and the Challenged Athletes Foundation Partner to Help Amputees Take
One Step Further in Living a Life Without Limitations
You've seen what they do for years. Without them, Rudy wouldn't run, Paul
Martin would not be an Ironman and Jim MacLaren may have never become the
legend that he is.
Ossur North America is the maker of the advanced prosthetics these athletes
and so many more use to propel them forward and live a life without
limitations. They are also a new partner of the Challenged Athletes
Foundation. They have supported CAF for years through sponsorship and
product donations. You may remember at last years San Diego Triathlon
Challenge the CAF, Ossur and Loma Linda O & P gave five year old Jake Frank
his first pair of running legs.
As we move in to our next decade and launch new mentoring and fitness
programs for people with disabilities, Ossur has come forward to help us get
this off the ground and not only help amputees receive advanced prosthetics,
but help them realize their full potential through fitness and mentors.
It was Jim MacLaren who in 1992 set the Ironman world record for amputees in
a time of 10:42. He accomplished that on what was then a revolutionary new
prosthetic foot called a Flex Foot Mod 3 (Flex Foot is now a brand of
Ossur). It was made of carbon fiber, was able to store energy and made it
possible for Jim to absorb shock and put pressure on a residual limb not
meant to bear weight. He proved that as an amputee, you could not only
finish an Ironman, but do so within the top 20% of the field. His
accomplishment cemented him as a legend and role model to thousands of
amputees and triathletes around the world.
Today, because of Ossur technology and role models like Jim, there are
amputees who run 100 meters in just over 11 seconds. They have scaled Mt.
Everest and they have run for seven days straight through the Sahara Desert.
And this fall, above the knee amputee and CAF Program Manager, Sarah
Reinertsen, will become the first amputee woman to finish the Ironman World
Championship in Kona.
Imagine that?
By putting their products to the test and pushing for advanced technology,
it trickles down to the very basics of life. Balance. To have the ability to
go to work, go for a run and come home to family without taking your leg off
all day is for many an Ironman in and of itself. Ossur makes that possible.
To ensure amputees can take advantage of this technology, Ossur invests in
quality education for Prosthetists through the Ossur Academy and education
for amputees through a series of Mobility Clinics. And through their support
of the Amputee Coalition of America and the Challenged Athletes Foundation,
they ensure amputees have access to a quality lifestyle.
We are proud to partner with Ossur and work together to ensure amputees and
all people with disabilities can live a life without limitations. For more
