Academy members have overwhelmingly approved the measure to change the bylaws which passed with more than 80 percent in favor of the revisions. The changes primarily affect the definitions of eligibility for membership resulting in more refined membership categories that send a clear message of the value of formal education, while recognizing the importance of a dedication to lifelong learning.
* Active (voting) Member remains the category for ABC certifees who have graduated from a CAAHEP-accredited program, completed a residency and passed the ABC exam. Practitioners certified by the ABC through alternative pathways and licensed practitioners may also become an Active member after completing 75 post-certification PCE credits (100 for dual certification).
* Associate Member - for practitioners certified by the ABC after March 1, 2004 and are not a graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited program, as well as licensed practitioners from a state that requires graduation from a CAAHEP accredited practitioner program as the minimum education standard to practice may join the Academy under this category. All Associate Members have the ability to become Active members.
* Affiliate Member - for ABC Registered Technicians, Fitters and Assistants.
* Professional Member - for professionals from related fields (CPeds, PTs, Ots, etc.).
* Student Members - for those in CAAHEP-accredited practitioner or NCOPE-accredited technician programs.
More complete information on the wording of the bylaws changes can be found on the Academy website ( www.oandp.org).
The moratorium on new member applications has ended and the Academy will immediately begin a recruitment campaign to welcome the new ABC certifees.
