A Comprehensive Gait and Physical Assessment
Using Nothing but Your Hands, Eyes and Ears
Today's orthotist/prosthetist has extensive education, training and skills in patient examination, visual gait analysis and functional assessment. If resources such as the recent physical therapy report, computerized gait analysis and latest physician's notes are available, the practitioner would be optimally prepared to initiate O&P care. But this does not happen routinely.
The reality is that patient information rarely accompanies the individual to the exam room. As such, it is imperative that the orthotist/prosthetist develop the ability to efficiently and effectively use his/her hands, eyes and ears to obtain a comprehensive clinical picture of the patient.
The Academy's Clinical Techniques seminar on Gait and Physical Assessment for O&P Professionals, June 4-5 in Newington, CT will review the practical use of goniometric science, manual muscle testing techniques and observational gait assessment and body segment analysis to enable formulation of the optimal O&P treatment plan.
These skills will be covered in a pragmatic fashion so a complete exam can be accomplished within a 20-minute patient encounter. Through the use of a comprehensive lecture/lab forum, participants will be trained to incorporate these assessment tools into everyday practice, irrespective of diagnosis or functional deficit.
The teaching format will include lecture, demonstrations and break out sessions for all participants to practice their newly acquired skill sets. Select patients will be brought in for team evaluation, assessment and final recommendations to be made to the entire group. Video analysis will be used to help augment the evaluation of the pathologic gait for the representative neurologic patient.
The course is taught by Robert Lin, CPO, FAAOP, Matthew Parente, CPO, PT and Mark Geil, PhD. This program has applied for 9 PCE credits from the American Board for Certification.
