I just received this response from an inquiry I sent to the Illinios Department of Professional Regulation:
Dear Mr. Boggs,
Thank you for directing your questions to the Illinois
Department of Professional Regulation via the Internet.
The Department does not/cannot require you to maintain
membership in a private group. The Department does utilize their test,
but if you meet all requirements for renewal, you may renew your
license, which does not require membership in ABC.
Yours
truly,
Kim
Scott, Board Liaison
Suddenly, the highest standard is a state license, which is considerably cheaper than ABC membership. Since ABC made the decision in a rash and careless manner without regard to the thoughts of it's membership, now we have to make a decision. For myself and every other practitioner in a state with licensure, the choice seems obvious. What was ABC expecting to happen? Enough states have programs and boards in place now that the model for licesure can be more quickly copied and utilized in other states. How long will it really be before it is a reality across the country. I realize it isn't quite that simple, but it really seems to me that ABC (and BOC, for that matter) have done nothing other than ensure their own insignificance.
Would someone on the board please respond to this (if I'm wrong please tell me exactly how!). We need deserve some kind of explanation other than it's better than doing nothing.
