I volunteered, as a post-gradate with a bio-systems engineering degree, in the Orthotic and Prosthetic field for 400 hours, worked for 3000 hours before I was accepted to Northwestern’s program. I graduated Northwestern’s Orthotic program spring of 2003 and Prosthetic program in fall of 2003. I have completed the 500 clinical hours for the two programs and am immersed in my residency program. I will submit and complete a research project for each discipline. I will complete the 2 year residency requirement and take the boards for each discipline. I have chosen this path and will accept all the corresponding repercussions and ramifications that come along with the standards set by my predecessors.
The more I am ensconced in the field, I realize that credentials and letters do not mean as much as knowledge. I went into this field to make a difference and aid people that are less fortunate than I. I feel gifted to have the materials and growing knowledge to potentially assist someone. If I do not strive everyday to enlarge my resources to help accomplish these goals, I have wronged everyone that I have came into contact with, patients, doctors, physical therapist, etc. I will strive to possess the tools and education to accomplish this goal.
ABC and NCOPE set forth standards for a certified prosthetist orthotist, to provide students and residents a protocol to achieve the minimum standards to be able to help a patient achieve his or her goals. I believe it is my duty and obligation to achieve and gain as much education and knowledge, not because I am seeking credentials or certification, but a person that is gifted with the ability to help others and it is my profession. In that I want to achieve my fullest potential. The answer to the question is that I will not take the short cut. I will satisfy the minimum requirements set forth by NCOPE and ABC with due diligence and pride. I cannot offer any viable insight into ABC/BOC mergers just a naive resident’s response to a posted question.

It will be interesting to see the numbers of participants in the BOC
exams that have a March 29th deadline. I wonder how many students in
current ABC education programs will take the short cut and take the BOC
exam. I sure would. Hell, $75 to get my ABC Credentials (after the
BOC) sure beats a year of underpaid residency (food, housing, etc)!!!
How many ABC residents will continue on the ABC Certification path? It
will be interesting to compare the board exam numbers for the exams this
year.
