Dear list:
As promised I am going to summarize my responses to the Harmony system for a
young active amputee with profuse perspiration problems. First, I should say
this Patient has tried all the usual methods of perspiration reduction
including antiperspirants including OTC and Rx with little to no result. We have tried
suspension sleeves with expulsion valves along with the Clutch lock and fork
strap. He favors the Clutch lock and fork strap.
Back to the Harmony responses...most were negative and commented on my
original concern regarding reliability and asked to not be identified. Others
reported modest perspiration reduction but felt the weight is an issue no matter how
well the system suspends. Still others indicated Patient's would return after
several months with the system inoperative and didn't notice the difference
even after it was repaired.
A few commented that they had no problems with perspiration even with profuse
perspireres and commented the suspension is second to none.
The Otto Bock acquisition of TEC tends to bring a sense of trust and relief,
however, several have a bad taste and are waiting for a German version lighter
in weight.
My consenses is that the system still has its problems and is not the best
option for my Patient, I spoke with him and he does not want the weight nor the
perceived problems. I have heard several times that the weight doesn't matter,
I am not an amputee, but I know when someone slips a half a pound extra
weight on my foot no matter how well it suspends.
