Perhaps somewhere I missed some valuable information from ABC that this
was going to be done in a democratic fashion with input from the ABC
members? I do not recall a vote being sent to our ABC credentialed
practitioners to make this one time offer. (Sounds a bit like someone
is watching too many QVC events). As a advocate for ABC credentialed
facilities and practitioners, this makes my job very difficult. I serve
on a credentialing committee for a health insurance company as a
volunteer to represent the world of O/P. I constantly have to point out
the differences - and value- of BOTH organizations.
It is difficult to present this when this action takes place. I don't
recall hearing about the Physical therapists doing this with PTA's or
the RN's doing this with LPN or best of all MD's for PA's.
Who's decision was this? We have PAID to send key people to be trained
at Northwestern, take time from work, sit for tests, etc. By being an
ABC credentialed orthotist or prosthetist -- a non-practitioner as
myself - can easily make a stand for the profession. I have been beating
a drum to RAISE the bar - to get more MASTER level courses in O/P --
even PhD. Let's follow what the PT's have done to ELEVATE their
credentials. It should be harder, more work, more CEU's, etc to stand as
a certified orthotist / prosthetist. Not less. Heck - next thing you
know, you'll have some busniess hack like me being credentialed to work
on patients.
So - what's next??? Who do we need to write to, and how can YOU - the
paying professional, get this changed? As stated at the beginning on
this note - It seems to me that this decision was made and acted upon in
a vacuum. Now, I'm not ABC - so you tell us - Should this have been
voted upon?
